The short version
SkyMinute is built to work without tracking you. Astronomy calculations happen in your browser. We don't send your location to our servers, we don't have user accounts, and we don't use analytics that profile you.
What we collect
- Nothing on our servers about you personally. The astronomy app calculates tonight's sky locally in your browser.
- Location data (city or GPS coordinates) is stored only in your own browser using
localStorage, so you don't have to enter it on every visit. Clearing your browser data removes it. We never receive it. - Standard server logs. Our hosting (Dokku on our own VPS) records standard HTTP request logs — IP address, timestamp, user agent, requested URL — kept for up to 14 days for debugging and abuse prevention.
Third-party APIs your browser calls directly
When you use the app, your browser sends your location (rounded to ~10 km) to these public APIs to fetch real-time data. We do not proxy these requests through our servers.
- Open-Meteo — cloud cover forecast. Terms.
- NOAA SWPC — aurora Kp index (public U.S. government data).
- tle.ivanstanojevic.me — International Space Station orbital elements (a public mirror of Celestrak data; no location data sent).
Geolocation
If you tap "Use my exact location," your browser asks for permission and provides coordinates to the app. They are used only to calculate the sky for your spot and are stored only in your browser's localStorage. You can clear them anytime by tapping the location chip and choosing a different city, or by clearing site data in your browser.
Cookies
SkyMinute does not set cookies for tracking. We use localStorage and sessionStorage only to remember your chosen location and cache API responses for an hour — purely functional, not analytical.
Advertising
SkyMinute does not currently show ads. If we add ads in the future (likely Google AdSense), this policy will be updated to disclose what advertising partners collect and how to opt out, and we will require consent where the law requires it (EU/UK).
Children
SkyMinute is family-friendly and contains no content directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has interacted with the site in a way that requires action, contact us at the address below.
Your rights (GDPR, CCPA)
Because we do not collect personal data on our servers, there is no profile to access, correct, or delete. Server logs are automatically purged. For any privacy question, write to privacy@skyminute.com.
Changes
We'll update the "Last updated" date when this policy changes. Material changes will be highlighted at the top of the page for at least 30 days.
